Medium Crystal Malt Substitute

Medium crystal malt is a speciality malt known for its caramel and toffee-like flavours. However, if you don't have medium crystal malt on hand or are looking for a different taste profile, there are a few substitutes you can consider:

  • Light Crystal Malt: While it won't give as pronounced a caramel or toffee flavour as medium crystal malt, light crystal malt can still impart some of these notes and a similar colour.
  • Dark Crystal Malt: On the other hand, dark crystal malt can provide a deeper colour and stronger caramel flavours compared to medium crystal malt. It might also contribute hints of roasted and burnt flavours.
  • Caramel Malt: Although different in the processing, caramel Malt can be a good substitute for medium crystal malt. It imparts similar flavours and colours to the beer.
  • Amber Malt: This can be an alternative, offering a toasted biscuit flavour to your beer. However, the colour and flavour profiles will be different from medium crystal malt.
  • Munich Malt: Munich malt can be used for a malty, slightly sweet flavour, though it's not as sweet or caramel-like as crystal malt.

Remember, the results might not be identical to using medium crystal malt, as each malt type has a unique production process and thus imparts its own unique characteristics to the beer. Always consider the style of beer you're brewing and the flavour profile you want to achieve before selecting a substitute.

Adding caramelised malts to beer increases mouthfeel and body, while also contributing to foam stability.

Subject to current stock levels, malt is available in bags of 500g and 3 kg.
