Browse our range of beer brewing kits and make quality beer at home without needing to create a recipe from scratch. Whether you are looking for an easy first brew or a premium home brew beer kit with more malt, body and flavour, you will find lagers, bitters, pale ales, IPAs, stouts, porters and speciality beers from trusted brewing brands.

Most beer making kits contain prepared malt extract, hops and yeast, with the ingredients measured for a consistent result. Follow the kit instructions, keep your equipment properly sanitised and allow enough time for fermentation and conditioning, and you can produce approximately 40 pints of beer at home.

At The Hop Shop, we have been helping home brewers for over 50 years. We stock beer kits from manufacturers we trust, including Coopers, Muntons, Mangrove Jack’s, Festival, Woodforde’s, St Peter’s, John Bull, Geordie and Simply.

If you already own a fermenter, hydrometer, bottles or pressure barrel, choose the beer style you would like to brew next. If you are starting from scratch, our beer starter kits include the essential equipment needed for your first batch.

Choosing a Beer Brewing Kit

The best place to start is with the type of beer you already enjoy drinking. Beer brewing kits all follow a broadly similar process, but the ingredients, strength, body and flavour can vary considerably.

Standard, Two-Can and Premium Beer Kits

Standard one-can beer kits offer excellent value and are a straightforward introduction to home brewing. They normally require brewing sugar, beer enhancer or additional malt extract to reach the intended volume and strength.

Two-can and premium beer kits generally contain more malt extract and often need little or no additional fermentable sugar. The extra malt can produce a fuller body, improved head retention and a more rounded flavour. Many premium craft-style kits also include specialist yeast or hop additions for a more distinctive finished beer.

A more expensive kit is not automatically the right choice for every brewer. Standard kits are reliable and easy to customise, while premium kits are a good option when you want more depth and a recipe closer to a particular commercial beer style.

Beer Kits or Complete Starter Kits?

A beer kit contains the ingredients for the beer, but it does not normally include all the equipment required to ferment and package it.

If you have never brewed before, you will need a fermenter, sanitiser, hydrometer, syphon and either bottles or a suitable pressure barrel. A complete home brew beer starter kit brings the main equipment and ingredients together in one package.

If you already own the equipment, you can buy an individual beer kit and add any brewing sugar or enhancer specified by the manufacturer.

What Else Might I Need?

Check the individual product description before brewing. Depending on the kit, you may need brewing sugar or beer enhancer. Replacing ordinary brewing sugar with a malt-based enhancer can improve body, flavour and head retention.

You may also want to customise a kit with additional brewing hops, a different beer yeast or extra malt extract. These additions are optional unless the kit instructions state otherwise.

Tips for Better Kit Beer

Cleanliness and patience make a bigger difference than complicated equipment. Properly clean and sanitise everything that will touch the beer, ferment within the recommended temperature range and use a hydrometer rather than relying only on the number of days in the instructions.

Do not bottle or barrel the beer until fermentation is complete. Once packaged, give it sufficient time to carbonate and condition. Most kit beers are drinkable within a few weeks, but an additional week or two can noticeably improve flavour and clarity.

Beer Brewing Kit FAQs

Are beer brewing kits suitable for beginners?

Yes. Beer kits are one of the easiest ways to begin home brewing because the recipe is already developed and the main ingredients are prepared and measured. Beginners starting without equipment should choose a complete beer starter kit.

How much beer does a beer kit make?

Most home brew beer kits make approximately 40 pints, or 23 litres. Some stronger, premium or small-batch kits make a different quantity, so always check the individual product details.

Does a beer kit need sugar or beer enhancer?

It depends on the kit. Many standard one-can kits require brewing sugar, beer enhancer or malt extract, while most two-can and premium kits contain more malt and may not need additional fermentables. The product description and manufacturer’s instructions will explain exactly what to add.

Is beer enhancer better than brewing sugar?

Brewing sugar ferments cleanly and is the most economical option. Beer enhancer usually combines fermentable sugar with malt extract and can give the finished beer more body, flavour and improved head retention. The best choice depends on the beer style, your budget and the result you want.

How long does a beer brewing kit take?

Primary fermentation commonly takes 7 to 14 days. The beer then needs time to carbonate and condition in bottles or a pressure barrel. Many kit beers are ready in three to six weeks from brew day, although stronger and darker styles often improve with longer maturation.

What equipment do I need?

You will normally need a fermenter, sanitiser, hydrometer, stirring spoon, syphon and bottles or a suitable pressure barrel. A complete starter kit is the simplest option if you do not already own this equipment.

Can I improve or customise a beer kit?

Yes. Depending on the recipe, you can use malt extract or beer enhancer for additional body, change the yeast or add hops for more aroma and flavour. It is best to brew the kit as intended first so you have a baseline before making substantial changes.

Should I use bottles or a pressure barrel?

Both methods work. Bottles are convenient for storing, sharing and chilling individual servings. Pressure barrels are useful for serving larger batches at home, particularly traditional ales and bitters. Some highly carbonated beer styles are better suited to suitable pressure-rated bottles or kegs.
