11 Litre Glass Carboy
11 litre glass carboy for wine, cider, mead and beer. Ideal for half batches, split recipes and bulk ageing. Compatible bung sold separately.
11 Litre Glass Carboy for Small-Batch Fermentation
This 11 litre glass carboy sits neatly between a standard demijohn and a full-size 23L carboy. It is useful for half-size batches, split recipes, experimental brews and bulk ageing wine, typically holding enough for around 14 standard 750ml bottles with sensible transfer losses.
The clear, non-porous glass makes fermentation and clearing easy to monitor and will not absorb flavours or odours.
Why Choose an 11L Carboy?
- Ideal for half-size batches and recipe trials
- Useful for splitting a larger batch between yeasts, fruit or oak treatments
- Suitable for wine, cider, mead and beer
- Non-porous glass is easy to inspect and sanitise
- Straight-sided Italian-made design
Specifications
- Maximum capacity: approximately 11 litres
- Material: clear glass
- Diameter: approximately 23cm
- Height: approximately 43cm
- External neck diameter: approximately 55mm
- Internal neck diameter: approximately 32mm
Bung and Airlock Compatibility
The neck is wider than a standard 4.5–5L demijohn, so a standard demijohn bung will not fit. Use the compatible Silicone Bored Bung with a standard airlock.
Using an 11 Litre Carboy
The stated 11 litres is the vessel’s approximate maximum capacity. During vigorous primary fermentation, allow suitable headspace for the recipe and yeast you are using rather than filling the carboy to the brim. For quieter secondary fermentation or bulk ageing, avoid unnecessary headspace where your recipe calls for a topped-up vessel.
An 11L carboy is especially handy for splitting a larger batch. You can compare two yeasts, try different fruit or oak additions, or keep a smaller portion separate for ageing without committing a full 23-litre batch.
Safe Handling and Cleaning
- Inspect the carboy before every use and do not use chipped or cracked glass
- Avoid boiling liquid and sudden temperature changes
- Never lift a full carboy by the neck or a neck-mounted handle
- Move it from underneath or use a purpose-made carrier
- Use non-abrasive cleaning tools to avoid damaging the glass
A small external casting line may be visible near the base; this is normal and does not affect performance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What bung fits the 11 litre glass carboy?
Use the compatible Silicone Bored Bung. A standard demijohn bung is too small for this wider neck.
Can I use it for beer, cider and mead as well as wine?
Yes. The vessel can be used for wine, cider, mead and beer, provided you use it appropriately for the fermentation or ageing stage.
How many wine bottles does 11 litres make?
After allowing for normal transfer losses and sediment, it is typically enough for around 14 standard 750ml bottles.
Can I pour boiling liquid into it?
No. Avoid boiling liquid and sudden temperature changes because thermal shock can damage glass.
Glass can break in transit. We carefully pack these carboys and will rectify transit breakage on UK shipments.
