Traditional 1 Gallon Glass Demijohn
This 1 gallon glass demijohn is the traditional choice for fermenting and maturing small batches of wine, cider, mead and country wines. Its clear glass body makes it easy to monitor fermentation and clarity, while the narrow neck accepts standard demijohn bungs.
A UK gallon is 4.546 litres. This demijohn has a 4.54L capacity to the brim, so allow suitable headspace during active fermentation.
Key Features
- Traditional twin-handled glass demijohn bottle
- Capacity: 1 UK gallon (4.54L) to the brim
- Clear, non-porous glass that will not retain flavours or odours
- Suitable for wine, cider, mead and other small-batch ferments
- Accepts standard demijohn bungs and airlocks
How to Use This Demijohn
For active fermentation, fit a bored rubber bung and airlock so carbon dioxide can escape. For storage after fermentation has completely finished, use a suitable solid bung or safety stopper.
For vigorous primary fermentation, leave enough headspace for foam. When ageing or clearing a finished wine, minimise the air gap to help reduce oxidation.
Glass Demijohn Care
- Inspect the glass before every use and do not use it if chipped or cracked
- Avoid boiling water and sudden temperature changes, which can cause thermal shock
- Carry from underneath rather than relying only on the glass handles
- Clean promptly after emptying and use a suitable non-abrasive cleaner
