Traditional Glass Demijohn — 4.5L UK Gallon

1 gallon glass demijohn bottles are a staple for small-batch fermentation. With a narrow neck and twin-handled design, this traditional UK-style demijohn is ideal for maturing homemade wine, mead, cider, and more.

Unlike large carboys, the compact 4.5L capacity is well suited for experimental or seasonal brews. The narrow neck helps reduce oxygen exposure during fermentation or storage.

Use with a bored bung and airlock for active fermentation, or seal with a solid stopper when aging.

What Is a 1 Gallon Glass Demijohn?

A 1 gallon demijohn is a clear glass vessel used by homebrewers to ferment and store beverages like wine and mead. It holds 4.5 litres to the shoulder and features a traditional bulb shape with twin glass handles for easy carrying.

  • Fully transparent — monitor clarity and fermentation progress
  • Compact size — great for testing recipes or small quantities
  • Traditional look — ideal for gifting or classic-style winemaking

Compatible With

  • Rubber bungs — for sealing or attaching airlocks
  • Airlocks — allow CO₂ release during active fermentation
  • Solid stoppers — seal the vessel during aging

Common Uses

  • Wine making — mature red, white, or fruit wines in small batches
  • Mead fermentation — traditional honey wine brewing
  • Cider brewing — perfect for seasonal apple or pear ferments
  • Split batches — ideal for experimenting with yeast or adjuncts

Brewer's Tip

Always leave at least 5cm of headspace when filling to allow for foaming during fermentation. Once fermentation is complete, switch from an airlock to a solid bung to limit oxygen exposure during aging.
