Yeast nutrient gives brewing yeast the nitrogen, vitamins, minerals and other growth factors that may be missing from a fermentable liquid. It can help yeast establish itself promptly and ferment cleanly, but it is not a cure-all and it is not needed in every recipe.

What Is Yeast Nutrient?
Yeast nutrient is a fermentation aid, usually supplied as a powder or granules. Depending on the formulation, it may provide yeast-assimilable nitrogen, vitamins such as thiamine, minerals, trace elements or inactive yeast-derived nutrients.
It is not normally live yeast. You still need a suitable brewing or wine yeast to start fermentation. The exception is a product specifically sold as a combined yeast compound, which contains yeast and supporting ingredients together.
Why Does Yeast Need Nutrient?
Yeast requires more than fermentable sugar. It also needs usable nitrogen and micronutrients to reproduce and complete fermentation. Grape must and all-malt wort can naturally supply some of these materials, while honey, refined sugar solutions and certain fruit juices may provide very little.
A genuine deficiency can contribute to a slow start, sluggish fermentation, poor attenuation and stressed-yeast aromas. Nutrient works best as a planned addition at the correct time, rather than as an automatic late treatment whenever an airlock becomes quiet.

How Much Yeast Nutrient Should You Use?

Use the dosage printed on your selected product or supplied recipe. Concentration and composition vary, so a rate stated for Young's, Tronozymol, a mead nutrient or a cider sachet cannot safely be transferred to another product.
Measure accurately for the actual volume you are fermenting. More nutrient does not automatically produce a faster or better fermentation. Excess can remain unused, affect flavour or give unwanted microorganisms additional material after fermentation.
When Should You Add Yeast Nutrient?
Most wine and cider recipes add nutrient when the must is prepared, shortly before or alongside the yeast. A single-dose product should normally be used at the stage stated on its packet.
Meadmakers sometimes divide the total permitted amount across the early part of fermentation. Only use staggered nutrient additions when the chosen product or a reliable recipe supports them. Do not exceed the total dose, and add powder carefully because dissolved carbon dioxide can cause sudden foaming.
Avoid casual late additions after fermentation is nearly complete. Yeast may no longer be able to use them, and the apparent problem may have another cause.
How to Add Yeast Nutrient Safely
- Confirm the batch volume and read the product instructions.
- Measure the stated amount with clean equipment.
- If the instructions permit, dissolve or disperse it in a small amount of must or clean water before adding.
- Add it at the stated stage and mix gently without splashing.
- For an active mead fermentation, release gas carefully and leave ample headspace before any supported staggered addition.
Keep the container dry and tightly closed. Do not return a used or wet spoon to the pack.
Can Yeast Nutrient Restart a Stuck Fermentation?
Sometimes, but only when nutrient deficiency is genuinely the cause. A fermentation may also slow or stop because the temperature is unsuitable, the yeast has reached its alcohol tolerance, the original gravity was excessive, the pH is difficult, the yeast was unhealthy or there is little fermentable sugar left.
First take a hydrometer reading and compare it with the recipe's expected gravity. Check the temperature and confirm whether the reading changes over several days. Do not add repeated doses blindly. - Using nutrient instead of yeast: nutrient usually contains no live fermenting organism.
- Assuming every product has the same dose: formulations and strengths differ.

- Adding dry powder to a highly carbonated mead too quickly: this can cause a rapid foam-over.
- Trying to fix poor temperature control with nutrient: nutrient cannot correct every source of yeast stress.

No. Yeast is the living microorganism that performs fermentation. Nutrient supplies materials that help it grow and work. A product labelled as a complete yeast compound may contain both, so check the pack.

Names are not completely standardised. Some energisers contain a broader blend of inactive yeast, vitamins, minerals or other fermentation aids, while a basic nutrient may rely more heavily on nitrogen salts. Compare the actual product description and dosage rather than relying on the name alone.
Does mead need yeast nutrient?
