5 Litre Glass Demijohn Bottle

This 5 litre glass demijohn bottle is a clear, reusable fermentation vessel for small batches of wine, cider, mead and country wine. It is particularly well suited to typical 4.5 litre (one UK gallon) recipes, leaving useful space above the liquid while keeping the batch in a compact vessel.

The single integrated handle makes an empty demijohn easier to position. When it contains liquid, always support it from underneath rather than carrying it by the handle alone.

How It's Used

The narrow neck and clear glass make this demijohn useful for secondary fermentation, clearing, conditioning and maturing. It may also be used for primary fermentation when the recipe leaves enough headspace. For fruit pulp or vigorous fermentation, a bucket or wide-neck fermenter is often easier to clean and manage.

What Else Do I Need?

For fermentation, fit a bored rubber demijohn bung with a bubbler airlock. The bung and airlock are sold separately.

Use a small 5 litre syphon to transfer the finished drink without pouring or disturbing sediment. Our syphoning and racking guide explains the process. Clean promptly after use with a suitable brewing cleaner such as VWP Cleaner Steriliser 100g, following the product instructions.

Glass or PET?

Glass is rigid, non-porous and less prone to scratching than plastic, but it is heavier and can break. If lower weight and shatter resistance matter more, compare the 4.5L wide-neck PET demijohn.

Glass Demijohn Care

• Inspect the glass before every use and do not use it if chipped or cracked
• Do not add boiling liquid or expose the glass to sudden temperature changes
• Support a filled demijohn from underneath; do not rely on the handle alone
• Use non-abrasive cleaning tools and store the vessel where it cannot be knocked
